The ferry ride to Cape Lookout (one of the barrier islands) felt like an abbreviated journey to the end of the world to me. Nature is all sky, sea, shells, sand, wind and water here. It is a wild, but healing place, somewhere you can re-charge, and re-calibrate, even if you're just here for a few hours.
Visitors come to climb the lighthouse, learn about its history, or simply to spend the day on the beach. You can also camp here. There are few amenities here, which only ads to the remote beauty of the island.
