Tracking Great White Sharks
As anyone who’s seen Jaws can tell you, great white sharks troll the waters off Massachusetts and—with an ever-growing population of chubby seals lolling on the beach at Monomoy—Chatham sees its fair share of these predators. Rather than shriek and run, though, Chatham Bars Inn has collaborated with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy to find creative ways to ensure the protection of the sharks and to educate people about the need to save them from extinction. The big-ticket item is a full-day boat trip accompanying a research vessel as it tracks and tags the sharks, aided by a spotter plane. Other options include a morning boat ride over to the Chatham Light to check the stationary monitors to see if any tagged sharks have been nearby, or to meet and talk with the very marine biologists involved in the tagging, tracking, and rescue of the species.
