Casual wanderers can pack a lunch and sunscreen and spend the day on the water where limbo catches them in neither the Bay or the Pacific. The safe and sometimes sound Oakland Estuary, which separates Alameda from Oakland, will by kayak or canoe have water lovers paddling eastward from the Jack London Square starting point, crossing beneath bridges and back - with the occasional seal playing below the various decks that surround the waterway.
Depending on the traffic that day, folks can either get lost in the serenity or find themselves working the upper body and abs against the wakes caused by passing watercraft (yacht club sailing practice is popular here). Other times one can only admire the speed and agility with which the entire Stanford University rowing team practices as they swiftly pass by.
Kayaks, standup paddleboards and canoe rentals start from $20 an hour (with paddles and life vests included in rental).
