Canada is a big country and I only got the opportunity to see the western side of the country a couple of years ago when I flew to Calgary to visit my sister who was living there. I knew the Rocky Mountains were something to see but nothing prepared me for seeing them in person. My last few days in Alberta were set aside to embark on a mini road trip away from the city and into the Rockies. We drove to the outskirts of the city and the terrain was fairly flat with fields and distant subdivisions until…the road in front of us revealed the tops of the mountains coming into view in the distance. Towering, snow-capped peaks that were even more spectacular than I’d imagined. So beautiful that tears came to my eyes. Lake Louise, Kananaskis Country, Banff Springs, Sulphur Mountain. We seen it all and even went on a gondola ride to get a better view! We arrived in Jasper National Park and the beauty there took my breath away. We stayed the night at the Fairmont Lodge in an upgraded suite where the morning brought a spectacular sunrise and three Elk eating from a tree right on our doorstep. The Caribbean may be a favorite destination for Canadians looking to get away from the cold but they are truly missing out if they never experienced the world-renowned beauty and untouched, natural landscape of the Rocky Mountains.
