San Francisco Hearts Portugal: Eat at Cafe St. Jorge
Cafe St. Jorge is named after the island of Sao Jorge, one of Portugal's nine islands in the Azores archipelago, and is the island where Andrea de Francisco, the owner of the cafe, still has family. Cafe St. Jorge, located in San Francisco's Mission district, is a true homage to a well-loved island as there is much heart here, evident in the cafe's festive and welcoming ambience, the thoughtful menu full of organic and locally sourced ingredients, and the kind and friendly service. People often stay for hours, talking with friends or working quietly on their laptops. The menu is a generous mix of fresh, healthy and very tasty breakfasty/brunch items along with an assortment of traditional Portuguese pastries. I spotted a poster on Cafe St. Jorge's front window that mentioned a Portuguese language night on the first Monday of every month. The flyer read: "Drink some wine, hang out, and attempt some Portuguese." Love it!
