After a long morning of wandering through the tiled facades and busy city hills of Porto, a stroll along the shops and cafes on the banks of Rio Douro refreshes the soul - particularly on a cool day when light unobstructed winds breeze up from the river.
To grab a bite and warm ourselves with sangria and caipirinha, we took to a high table at Café do Cais. We were delighted to also find soft warm throws to drape over our chilly shoulders and legs.
With a view of the Dom Luís bridge, the port wine cellars on the opposite bank of the river and an occasional boat, the lunch atmosphere is travellers perfection. We sat amongst a few others with gentle conversation all about; we dined on octopus, perfectly seasoned with garlic and served with greens; and we sipped while watching the world breeze by.
And, like most perfect travel memories, it passed far to quickly.
