Bygdøy Peninsula, an upscale residential area close to Oslo, is popular with tourists thanks to five excellent museums. The Kon-Tiki Museum is home to ships and other artifacts from the expeditions of Thor Heyerdahl, while the Fram Museum houses the strongest wooden ship ever built, used by Arctic explorer Roald Amundsen. Both museums are clearly visible on the shoreline. Further inland, the Viking Ship Museum houses real-life burial ships found in the Oslo Fjord region. Bygdøy’s excellent parks, forests, hiking trails and beaches are a well-guarded secret of Oslo locals.
