The touristic small town of Bukit Lawang is one of the best places to access the Gunung Leuser National Park in order to observe orangutans (Pongo abelii) in Sumatra.
The village has different options for accommodation. We stayed at the Eco Lodge, that offers comfortable cabins with almost fully equipped bathrooms.
The visit to Gunung Leuser starts early in the morning by crossing the river Bohorok on a little boat and trekking up to the feeding platform where the orangutans' daily feeding takes place at 10 a.m.
Afterwards I recommend a trek through the luscious rain forest, where a variety of primates can be encountered: macaques, gibbons, langurs and, of course, more orangutans.
