While Lubbock, Texas--the home of Buddy Holly, Natalie Maines and Mac Davis--may conjure up more country music memories than romantic imaginings, this scene came at the conclusion of a an intimate--and, yes, romantic--picnic upon the limestone bluffs above Buffalo Springs Lake, a lively, watercraft-oriented recreational respite from summer's swelter.
The city's cultural life is not as flat as its surrounding terrain. I discovered the best all-night taqueria east of LA in this dusty, Llano Estacado town. National touring musicians perform at Texas Tech. And to the north lies the second largest canyon in North America, Palo Duro, a place for hikers to explore otherworldly landscapes and sit beside the Red River of Texas music fame.
This one intimate afternoon precipitated a year-long journey for me through the wide, wild, windswept places of the American West, images from which appear elsewhere among this collaborative.
