Motorbiking the Bolaven Plateau, Southern Laos
One of the most bombed locations during the Vietnam War, this plateau a few hours north of the Cambodian border is now a peaceful place of waterfalls, coffee and tea plantations. At 3,000 - 4,000 feet above the surrounding country, it offers a welcome respite from the heat in Pakse, the relatively large town to the west. You can rent 125cc semi-automatic bikes in Pakse for about $7 a day. (You must leave your passport as a deposit) There's a wide range of accommodation in the small towns along the way and waterfalls around every corner. Admission is usually 5000 kip (70 cents) per location.
