Exploring La Route du Thé
Nearly 200 years ago, Scottish botanist Robert Fortune pulled off a huge feat of corporate espionage: He smuggled precious tea plants out of China for the East India Company. His transplantation of those plants to India—and then on to Mauritius—ensured that tea became big business on the island. La Route du Thé allows you to drive alongside picturesque tea fields, sample local flavors, and learn more about how tea is processed here. Make sure to stop at Bois Cheri, a working plantation and museum, to celebrate tea's history and to take in the gorgeous, fragrant scenery.
