It's really easy to be a veg-head in PDX. You can't turn around without bumping into something gluten-free, soy-free, or meat-free. The Blossoming Lotus produces some of the most creative and delicious concoctions that will make you wonder why you'd ever want to eat meat again. The Lotus is in an old, remodeled storefront off NE Broadway that's warm and welcoming. The food spans lunch and dinner with brunch on the weekends. It's one of the few places you'll find BBQ soy curls, pecan chorizo, sliced seitan steak, and vegetable ribbon noodles.
There's a selection of live dishes, recipes requiring little to no cooking. The live nachos are a great starter and on the happy hour menu. The whiskey ginger BBQ sandwich is a popular lunch choice that dazzles the tastebuds. The pierogis are a new twist on a Polish classic that melts in your mouth. Order them with the green bowl to expand your veggie horizon. The tacos are only available during happy hour and the mole version is worth showing up for on time. Sidewalk seating picks up the overflow in nice weather.
The Lotus bar beckons with a solid collection of local spirits, wines, beers, and ciders. Some offerings are organic and change with the season. Cocktails come in all colors and you'd be money ahead with "what the dill?," "kissed by fire," or the "lemon bomb." The staff knows what's cooking and is always friendly and sharp. Everything is made-to-order, leaving you plenty of time to wonder what's for dessert.
