About halfway up the journey from the village of Mürren to the 9,744-foot summit of the Schilthorn, travelers must transfer between cable cars at a high, rocky outpost called Birg. In the past there was no real reason to linger in Birg (though some hardcore hikers would get out here for walks back down to Mürren)—but that’s about to change. In summer 2014, Birg will debut the Skyline Walk: a transparent viewing platform that’s cantilevered out over the dizzying abyss below. From here you’ll have unobstructed views of the ragged Alps across the valley, and feel like you're walking on air with the see-through floors. A bistro at the station, Bistro Birg, was updated to a modern look a few years ago, making it the ideal place to enjoy a glass of beer outside in the sun.
