Our guide led us through a maze of thick concrete walls in the dark. It was cold, and the sounds seemed to echo through the halls of this old converted WWII-to-cold-war bunker.
In every room we learned more about how ill prepared the structure really was if there had been a nuclear attack, in fact it all seemed like smoke and mirrors to avoid the inevitable.
However midway through the tour we followed our guide through a door and ended up in the Pankstrasse subway station standing among Berliners waiting for a train. I was pretty stunned to find out that subways were actually also designed as bunkers for nuclear disaster.
The guide was full of information about the true safety and effectiveness of the bunkers and led us through all of the secret rooms and processes set up in case of nuclear war. It was a fascinating and enlightening piece of Berlin deep underground.
