Play with local children in ancient ruins
Arriving at Beng Mealea fulfilled my dreams of becoming Indiana Jones. When I arrived with my Guide there was virtually no one there, and as I explored the crumbling ruins I noticed that local children were playing among the Angkor Style ruins. I played peek a boo with a small Cambodian child, which ended up being my most treasured memory and photo of my whole trip. It is about 2 hours outside of Siem Reap but I recommend heading out there and exploring, it gives you sense of what people 100 years experienced when seeing these ruins for the first time. Also unlike anywhere else in the world the locals have been able to make these historical sites a part of their daily lives, imagine growing up playing in the crumbling ruins. You won’t see this in Mexico or Egypt, or even Vietnam.
