Think cloud forest, and images of a mysterious fairy tale with a princess locked in a beautiful castle might spring to mind. In reality, this environmental phenomenon is exactly what it says: a forest of clouds which occur in the high-altitude montanes of Ecuador. On a recent trip to the Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve, 52km from Quito, I had the opportunity to learn about these bizarre veils of mist and explore the magical cloud forest for myself. Bellavista means “beautiful view” in Spanish, and it certainly defines the reserve accurately. With 360 degree views of the Andes Mountains, 10km hikes, lush untouched tropical forest, and vast displays of brightly colored birds and flowers it's like a real-life fairy tale.
