Louisiana’s capital hosts tens of thousands of Mardi Gras revelers each year with a series of parades, parties and cultural events hosted by the city’s seven krewes. The fun starts on Feb. 15, when the Krewe of Jupiter hosts the first parade, and it continues over the next two weeks with a Dr. John concert, several formal balls and many other events. The party culminates on March 1 with a longtime tradition of the Krewe of Spanish Town: the placement of hundreds of custom-built wooden pink flamingos in the lakes around Louisiana State University.
