After bathing elephants in the beautiful Batang Serangan river, my friends from Barcelona and I return to Green Lodge for a mid morning coffee. The dining area at Green Lodge is a solid construction made from re claimed timber, its entrance firmly grounded on bedrock, further out, the tables sit thirty metres above a small gorge. Below us the river is squeezed between sheer rock and its intense flow pushes the sweet scent of orchids up on a cool breeze. Opposite, across the river, is the dense forest of the Gunung Leuser National Park, where we often see macaques and Thomas`s Leaf Monkeys. Today we are lucky, it`s September and forest trees are fruiting, providing a sumptuous banquet for orang utans and gibbons. From our table at Green Lodge we look up to see an orang utan watching us with curiosity, before quietly disappearing back into the jungle.
