The capital of Catalunya can feel like several cities in one, making it impossible to see it all in a day. There’s the Barri Gothic, with its warren of medieval streets, the 19th-century buildings of the Eixample, and the Catalan Modernist Barcelona whose most famous figure was Antonio Gaudí. Modernist Barcelona is still a work in progress as travelers will discover when they visit La Sagrada Familia. Construction on this soaring Gothic meets art nouveau church began in 1882 and the current goal is to complete it sometime in the first third of this century. A masterpiece, like a port call in one of Europe’s cultural capitals, shouldn’t be rushed.
