Banjarmasin Traditional Floating Market
Getting out of bed at 4.30am to wend your way through the dusty town to the river's edge is well worth it. As you putter up the river, coffee served by your guide on the boat, you'll see how this part of Borneo (Kalimantan) wakes up - washing in the river, kids dressed for school in uniforms by the boatload, and the call to prayer from the ubiquitous mosques. And the market is supposedly the least touristy and most authentic in Southeast Asia. Gorgeous colors, delicious fruit, and a beautiful way to get a sense of life on the water.
