The county of Bandera, Texas—less than an hour northwest of San Antonio—has a peculiar claim to fame. The county likely has more dude ranches than any other in the country: 11 of them, in fact, within an area of less than 800 square miles. This is great news for visitors who want to try a “City Slickers”-type adventure, amid gorgeous open plains and Hill Country woodlands. The ranches run the gamut from rustic (with lodging in bunkhouses and camps) to luxe (with private cabins, pools and spas). But all offer a sampling of typical ranch activities, including cattle round-ups, trail rides, evening campfires, and hearty morning “cowboy breakfasts.”
