This relatively nondescript house is unusual in the border regions of Timor-Leste simply for being a concrete structure. But it is also the scene of the massacre of the Balibo 5. It was the last refuge of five Australian based journalists, Greg Shackleton, Gary Cunningham, Tony Stewart, Malcolm Rennie and Brian Peters, who were murdered by invading Indonesian troops in 1975. Fellow newsman Roger East was murdered seven months later as he investigated the deaths of his colleagues. The massacre strained Australia's relationship with Indonesia, and helped garner strong community support for Timorese independence. Australian peacekeepers led efforts to stabilise the country when violence broke out in the wake of the vote for independence in 1999.
