Aysén Region

The name of the Aysén Region, which contains the Northern and much of the Southern Patagonian Ice Fields, may come from an indigenous word for fjord or water. Even if that disputed etymology is inaccurate, it is a fitting description of this part of Chile, where the irregular coastline is marked by channels and fjords at every turn. This sparsely populated area was not settled until early in the 20th century due to its geographical remoteness. Today, it is filled with national parks and is popular for fly fishing, but it is also vulnerable to development as debate rages over whether to dam some of its wild rivers.
