Alberta Street was fondly referred to as "the knife and gun club" back in the day. Now it's all about Last Thursday street parties, cool watering holes, and eateries like Aviary. The kitchen is willing to go way out on limb when exploring the fanfare of flavors that change with the harvest. Is it Asian? Is it Mediterranean? Is it NoPo (North Portland)? I don't know. The menu is challenging to define, but the food speaks for itself.
We went hog wild and tried the pig ears on our visit, along with a goat curry that dazzled. Our most subdued dish was the tempura green beans—not bad. There was the signature-laden beverage list and the usual suspects in the beer and wine departments. No need to go thirsty.
The space is tucked away from the street with a simple, clean feel. Minimal also works.
The honor of joining the ranks of the clean plate initiative was comfortably accomplished with everyone sharing all the entrees. I will advise NOT to miss the oysters if available. Worth the price of admission.
