Montmorillon is proud to be one of Europe's 15 "Cites de l'Ecrit" - a city of writing - and its narrow streets are positively crammed with bookshops. Shops devoted to graphic novels, and ancient maps, and artbooks, and modern literature... there's something for everyone here. Of course, a lot of these books will be in French - but that's all part of the educational fun. We spent a happy hour wandering in and out of the bookshops, and my favourite encounter was at the Au Cri de la Chouette, where the owner was more than happy to indulge my basic conversational French and have a chat with me about his stock. One entire bookcase of paperbacks called the "Yellow Series", turned out to be "policiers Americans" - American detective novels. I decided it was a good place to start reading!
