When business began moving away from downtown Joburg, Sandton became the city’s new commercial hub, with corporate headquarters and mega-malls aplenty—though one wouldn’t guess it while staying at AtholPlace Hotel, which feels a world away. Despite its central location just a few blocks from the heart of Sandton, AtholPlace retains a secluded air, offering the ultimate urban oasis.

Spend busy days taking care of business or splurging in the glossy Sandton City mall, then head for this chic, contemporary retreat. After meetings or a hectic shopping spree, guests can unwind in the heated pool, relax in front of the fireplace in the cozy library, or just read a book in the bird-filled gardens.

Neighborhood Vibe
Sandton is where it’s at, and guests are spoiled for choice here: Sandton City mall is a sprawling shoppers’ paradise, showcasing the best brands from all over the world. Mandela Square, a broad piazza, is lined with numerous cafés, all overlooking a behemoth statue of the eponymous Mandela himself (it’s a selfie-taker’s dream). Tasha’s is a lively spot for brunch. And the Sands is a rollicking lounge for a late-night party.

Insider Tips
Who it's best for: Business travelers who don’t want to feel like they’re in a business hotel but prefer something centrally located with plenty of character.
Our favorite rooms: Each of the rooms has a fresh, contemporary look with modern African touches, but book a Superior Suite (almost 600 square feet) for the added space.
Good to know: Large groups might want to consider checking in to the four-bedroom villa next door for even more privacy.
