Each year, Athens host the Twilight Criterium, a professional cycling race and part of three professional series. When founded in 1980, it was the first night bike race in the US held in over 60 years. Its only gotten better over the past 30+ years.
150 or so professional cyclist circle downtown Athens on narrow, bumpy streets with thousands of fans crowding the course. The swoosh of air followed by silence as the bikes pass go by faster and faster as the laps count down. It is unlike anything you have seen.
Amateur road and mountain bike races, a 5K race, children's races, demonstrations, food, drinks and thousands of visitors make this Athens' best weekend.
My advice, get there early, before the ladies' race and secure a spot in one of the beer gardens on the corners. Open container is not allowed except in these designated areas and the locations are ideal!
