Sounds rather odd, but that's how this day trip came about - in search of the white baboon I have heard so many people talk about. When you live in Arusha you can often have a "What to do this weekend?" brain freeze, so this seemed as good an excuse as any.
You can take in your own 4x4 (Rav 4, etc.) as it's rather easy to navigate around Arusha National park and it's only about an hour's drive from Arusha.
After hustling at the ranger gate among other safari drivers to get our permit, we entered the park and we were presented with a grand opening scene of zebras, buffalo and giraffe all grazing just beside the road. It looked like someone had set them down right there for us, it was a wonderful start to finding the white baboon.
We came across hundreds of flamingos, and let me assure you as pink and cute as they may be, get a few together and they are one mass of pink stench.
After stopping for lunch at a small hillside picnic spot, we came to the conclusion that the white baboon was a myth after all. We took our obligatory group picture at the rim of the mini crater and started our drive back to the main gate to head home - and who was sitting in the middle of the road getting groomed? None other than the White Baboon. We certainly were lucky that day as we have had so many people tell us they saw nothing while in Arusha National Park.
