My friend Amer, a local scuba instructor, lead me into this shop to look for something or other. I forgot what we were looking for as I was entirely distracted by jingling sounds, flashes of color and light- treasures all around me. Amer said "look up!" and this is what I saw.
The name of the shop is Al-Bayt Al-Bedu, or Bedouin House. It is stock full of glass beads, pottery, silver and other beautiful things. We were invited for a coffee by the owner's son, but never pressured to buy.
Aqaba, the southernmost city in Jordan and on the Red Sea, is famous for scuba diving and snorkeling. If you are a diver you will find the same gorgeous corals as in Egypt and Israel without all the fuss and tourists. But you will also find an ancient Hammam, the friendliest people, and a great place to shop. So pick up a little something to take home from the souk-think of it as your own little piece of history. Aqaba afterall has been around since 4,000 B.C.
