Antarctic Fur Seals
There are several types of seals in Antarctica, including the Antarctic Fur Seal. Once hunted for their hides, the fur seals are now thriving in Antarctica and number in the many millions. Part of the reason for this population explosion is thought to be due to the hunting of whales in the 19th and 20th centuries, thereby eliminating one of the fur seals’ predators. Cute but cranky, fur seals are a constant companion for any visitor to Antarctica.
