There is an amazing labyrinth of flamboyant architecture in the stunningly white City Palace just blocks away from this “throne.”
Granted, we only paid the $6 equivalent in rupees for what really was a convenient and inexpensive hotel with hot water, double-mattress beds and a rooftop restaurant with great views of the City Palace and Lake Palace in Lake Pichola. Try the chicken tikka (red) or thick and creamy mutton mughlai with naan. Sip lassi or mint tea in a glass for a refreshing finale.
At the City Palace allow several hours to fully explore the magnificent mirrored rooms, shaded gardens and inlaid mosaics. Give a nod to the statue of Chetek, the brave horse with the elephant nose intended to confuse the enemy.
Be sure to save just enough energy after a full day of exploring to hoist yourself once more to that “throne’” on high before sinking into a cozy bed.
