Every year in May, in what began 26 years ago, the Houston Art Car parade takes place on Allen Parkway along Buffalo Bayou next to downtown. What I like about it is that it brings people together to witness the full spectrum of what the human imagination can produce when it is untethered from what society would consider normal. You will see people driving things that venture from the profane to the comic but what I like most is that you will see people proudly driving things that most people wouldn't have the courage to even sit in--much less drive down the road. It's as much a celebration of the freedom of the human spirit as much as it is a celebration of art. It's quite refreshing that a parade trumpeting abnormality also happens to be a wonderful community gathering phenomenon as people from all levels of social strata come together in large numbers to watch.
