Driving back from Los Angeles to our home in San Francisco, we made a fuel stop at a small town called Bakersfield in Central California. Right by this gas station was All India Sweets and Groceries..My curiosity knew no bounds - an Indian store in the middle of nowhere!? It's a little past lunch time and we are hungry. There is a tiny buffet at the far end of the store. The food is simple but delicious and so authentic, that I am transported back to India. What we had chanced upon here was a page in history where in the early 20th century many Indian farmers had migrated from India in search of farm work and settled in this small town as it reminded them of their villages in Northern India, in the state of Punjab. The climate, fertile soil and its simple small town people were all reminiscent of a world they had left behind. Here, in Bakersfield,CA, they sought to recreate their world. The owner of the store Mr Vinod Kamboj, who migrated from India 20 years ago has run this store for the last 13 years. He is assisted by his son, Babbu, a 2nd generation Indian American(spiderman in picture!). He believes (and so do we) that he is now living the American dream. This was a trip made in heaven! We got to feed our body and mind in this remote California village! We feel so blessed.
