Aleutian WWII National Historic Area
Explore the WWII-era American army base of Fort Schwatka, one of Dutch’s four coastal defense posts. Set two kilometers (one mile) from the cruise-ship docks, it occupies the Ulakta Head on Mount Ballyhoo. Trekkers should be prepared for a 273-meter (896-foot) climb and wear layers to cope with quick-changing weather. Engineers designed these concrete lookouts and sturdy gun mounts to withstand bomb blasts and gale-force winds, but tread lightly, making sure to watch out for collapsed tunnel entrances, holes in the tundra and fragile cliff edges.
