Ristras in New Mexico
You may have noticed the hanging dried peppers in your travels through New Mexico. These are called ristras (pronounced ree-strah) and are the welcome sign of the Southwest. Ristras are not only decorative but also edible - these hanging chiles were traditionally hung to dry to be used later. The chile is quintessential to New Mexico's culture and cooking.Purchase one in the fall to hang in your house and then grind it up for a warm New Mexican dish in the cold winter.
