Al Ain
This oasis city, about 90 minutes inland through the desert (watch for camel herds on the side of the road), is the ancestral home of the Al Nahyan family. Visit the oasis gardens and the ancient burial ground (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). And make sure to stop at the restored Al Jahili Fort; it houses a permanent exhibit about Wilfred Thesiger, whose 1959 travel book Arabian Sands chronicles his adventures in the Rub' al-Khali (the Empty Quarter).
