Akrotiri is a prehistoric settlement from as early as 4,000 BC. The town was abandoned in 17th Century BC due to an earthquake, which preserved the site. It is believed that the inhabitants escaped but may have been killed by the resulting Tsunami.
The site, which is estimated only to have yet uncovered 3% of the village, has been reopened since 2012 and hopefully budgets will someday allow further excavation.
