Just off the jet & ready to jump start my virgin New Zealand experience,I had to do something just as crazy as the "kiwis."Yes, I did it.I bungy jumped off the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Although I was quite nervous,I thought I had done similar thrilling feats like skydiving in Miami, hang gliding over the Everglades,& of course helicopter rides in Alaska,Kauai,& Florida. However, while I was waiting 40 meters above the water at the bungy jumping pod, I thought,in all of those other cases,I had someone with me whether a tandem jumper, glider, or a pilot in the cockpit. This time I was going to throw MYSELF off a bridge. OMG!
I was strapped into the bungy cord, tying my feet together, making it awfully difficult to walk out to the platform. Techno music and a disco ball lightened the mood, but I walked tentatively, not looking at the water listening to the cues of the jumpmaster.
Then, ready, set, bungy jump. fell weightless & fast to the waters edge. Just as I thought I would touch the water, the cord bounced me back to an almost vertical position. It went by so quickly and smoothly. You wouldn't think that jumping off a bridge could be smooth, but it was.
Still bouncing and upside down, I grabbed my leg release to turn my body in a comfortable position to take in the view of the skyline, harbour, & Rangitoto Island. Although the vista was beautiful before, the sheer rush only amplified it.
It's a must in Auckland. I would do it again. Check out my video in the link below.
