Ahmedabad is a city in Gujarat, India known best for the annual celebration of Navratri. It's a festival that is deeply characterized by the popular dance that takes place for 9 nights in the communities, called Raas/Garba.
On my visit to this city, I walked old town, a charming labyrinth of streets that give you a glimpse into everyday life. These streets are grouped into 'pols' containing people either of the same caste or trade. Each 'pol' has its own entrance and some contain secret doors that link them to the rest of the city. Intriguing.
I wandered into this 'pol' to discover a gorgeous Hindu temple and a bunch of ladies sitting around and chatting.
Old town is easy to get to, take a cab or a local auto from your hotel, ask to be dropped off at the entrance to the Swaminarayan temple and begin your walk from here. Many hotels will have a map of old town or you can join the weekly Heritage Walk tours that will provide a guide to walk you around old town.
