Nearly skimming the water, I feel we are about to land and forget we have wheels and not pontoons. We race along just above the clear, sea-glass blue. I can see the reef just beneath the surface and the rush of speed seems all the greater for the proximity of great mounds of stag-horn and brain coral.
Earlier we stopped at Aerosaab, the private airport on Playa del Carmen's south side, to see if we could schedule a flight. An hour later I was gripping my seat and the wind was buffeting the twin engine, six-seater as she climbed above docked ferries and palapa-roofed restaurants and soared out over the sea.
