Mahi and Rainbows on The Melissa
I'm standing in the crows nest on board the Melissa, a 38 ft Beltram fishing boat. A light rain washes the morning and a rainbow appears. From down below I hear the familiar, "Fish on!" and I long to run down and watch the battle between Mahi and man. But I can hardly take my eyes from the rainbow as it seems to encircle, first the Mayan ruins peeking from the jungle on shore, then the periwinkle waters where sailfish, grouper, tuna, and shark teem in depths of 500 and more feet, then me. It wraps its radiant arms around me as I stand, wind in my hair, rain in my eyes, and salt spray on my arms and face. "Laura, come help me!" Lee yells from below and I drag myself away to take my turn at reeling in a rainbow colored fish. An hour later Captain William, 2x winner of the largest fishing tourney in the Riviera Maya, is frying my mahi for me. To find the Melissa, stop in at the Harbor Master's office in Puerto Aventuras or just go down to the Marina and ask anyone. They will point you the right way. Or, if you'd rather, Capt. William's cell is 987-871-3002. First Mate Manuel's is 987-871-4723. (From the US add 011 52 1) Cost? About $500 US to charter the boat for a half day.
