The 828-Mile Ring Road of Iceland
This well-named road, all 828 miles of it, circles the entire coastline of Iceland. In 2010, when my brother and I spent 28 days cycling this route, we passed through fjords, alpine prairies, coastal fishing villages, and glaciers—each day discovering a different microclimate and a new million-dollar vista. Since the entire population of Iceland lives within a few miles of the sea, traveling the road gave us lots of fantastic opportunities to meet with the locals—many of whom, no joke, believe in the existence of elves.
