Saffron Noodles and Sate is located on the edge of Little Italy and Mission Hills in San Diego. Owned by Su-Mei Yu, a woman from Thailand who wanted to recreate the types of foods that she grew up with sold by street vendors in Thailand. The food is really fresh and I love the pumpkin, coconut, tapioca pudding they have every fall. Also, they have a refreshing home-made ginger ale- the best I've ever tasted! If Thai isn't your thing, there are a half dozen restaurants in this little block. One is Blue Water Grill, a fish sandwich place made famous by appearing on the show 'Dives and Diners', not once but twice. Also, you can find Luche Libre taco shop, definitely worth a check out just for the interior pink dining room with Luche Libre wrestling paraphernalia on the walls! These are all great places to eat and will all be crowded the same hours as I listed in the Tip- read below... Tip- between 12 and 2pm Mon-Fri and early to late evenings on weekends is very crowded. Try to come between those times.

Fig Tree Cafe
The Fig Tree Cafe, located in the eclectic historic community of Hillcrest in San Diego, is one of my favorite places to start a relaxing weekend. They have a great menu of homemade items and you definitely have to try the in house made rosemary focaccia bread. They open at 8am on weekends and I recommend coming early, the place will fill up fast. There is patio seating where you can sit and enjoy the soft morning light. They also have health drink shots, like acai berry to give you an energy boost. I'm not really into a lot of sweet stuff in the mornings, but their mascarpone stuffed french toast topped with strawberries and mangoes is absolutely divine! I can only eat one and the other I take home for desert later.

Serra Museum
The Junípero Serra Museum, in Presidio Park, can be seen from Interstate 8 as you drive through San Diego's Mission Valley. It was here that a Spanish Franciscan missionary, Father Junípero Serra, and a group of soldiers established Alta California’s first mission and presidio (fort) in 1769. This is considered to be the birthplace of the state of California. The actual fort has since crumbled away, but there is a museum in it's place. There are large swaths of grassy areas where you can have a picnic and view the San Diego River from this high vantage point. There's an extensive exhibit featuring the Kumeyaay peoples who first lived here as well as other native tribes in the state of California.

Berta's Latin American Restaurant
Berta's is a hidden gem with delicious South American food located in Old Town. There's a large chain restaurant next door and it always astounds me that tourists (an locals) will saunter past Berta's fresh cooked food into a place that serves over-fried seafood. Everything I've had here is good, but Olinda's pudding topped with a port reduction sauce for dessert is a specialty that Berta makes as was taught to her by her grandmother.

Venissimo Cheese - Mission Hills
Venissimo is the only place we purchase cheese in San Diego. We love usually pack a picnic for our hikes and the cheeses are are a necessity for our basket. They have a wide variety of goat, cow, sheep and vegetarian cheese that are hard, soft, stinky, or for dessert. I love how they let you sample any cheese you want, the hardest part is choosing which ones for them to wrap up for you. They also carry artisan salumi's and other gourmet products. Venessimo supports local businesses by carrying excellent local made gourmet chocolates and truffles.

Balboa Park
What fascinates me the most is that Balboa Park was built as a series of temporary structures during the 1915-16 Panama-California Exposition to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. And they are still standing today. The structures have been slowly replace with more permanent concrete additions. Regardless, the whole park was supposed to be temporary! Inside the park are 17 museums, 19 gardens, the Old Globe Theatre and much more. There are two restaurants, my favorite being the Del Prado and there's an arboretum which is where this image was taken. Many festivals are held here, a popular one is December Nights which is usually held in the 2nd weekend of December and is a huge event attracting thousand of San Diegans & tourists. The Earth Day festival is also held here. Don't miss the Spanish Arts Village, a cool little village where you can watch artisans create their art in their shops, if you like, you can purchase. I like to watch the glass blowers, and many of them offer classes if you're in town long enough to try them out! There's way to much here to describe in the 1500 characters allowed, you'll just have to check out the park for yourself when you come to San Diego. Start with the web link I provided so you can know if there are any festivals or special events going on while you are here! We come here often to hone our photography skills, bird watch and just walk around looking at the interesting architecture.

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park
Old Town in San Diego has a LOT going on, including many yearly festivals. You can find shops selling kitsch, pottery, beautiful items hammered from tin, Tibetan goods & clothing. At one end is a large square park surrounded by a few restaurants & museums. My favorite shops are the San Diego Mineral & Gem store and South American Imports. If you're into ghosts, there's a haunted ghost tour as well as the Whaley House, one of the most haunted homes in the U.S. San Diego's only African museum can be found here run by a professor named Chuck Ambers.Check out the African & black American artifacts & learn about black Americans who took part in the founding of San Diego. If you go, make sure you have a few hours because he has a lot of stories to share! For eating, you have many choices. My favorite is Berta's South American cuisine located in a little white house. Gorge is the server and if you have a couple bucks, wave down the occasional street musician and he'll play you a song while you eat. At Fiesta del Reyes, there's a stage where you can watch traditional Mexican dancing on weekends and enjoy a mojito on the large outdoor patio, no indoor seating. There's some more shops around there to check out! Finally, there's the remodeled Cosmopolitan hotel & restaurant. It's made to look like the early 19th century and the food is pretty good. Watch those drinks though, the recipes are from the time period and apparently, folks drank it strong back then!

Whaley House Museum
The Whaley House is located in Old Town San Diego and is touted as the "Most haunted house in the United States" by the Travel Channel. The building was constructed in 1857 by Thomas Whaley as a granary that later became a courtroom. For a time in San Diego, this was the courtroom, store and playhouse all under one roof! Next door to the Whaley House is where you sign up for tickets for the walking tour. The rooms are fitted with some of the original belongings or replicas have been made of what was known to be in the house. The house is supposed to be haunted by the ghosts from the Whaley family, some of the men who were hung in front of the courthouse portion of the house and even a family pet dog! Whether is really is haunted or not- you be the judge! Either way, it is an interesting look into how the wealthy lived in San Diego when it was just a dusty, dry town. After the tour, there is shopping and several places to eat- such as Bertas, the Cosmopolitan or in the Fiesta Del Reyes square.

Bread & Cie Cafe
Bread & Cie is located in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego, CA. Not only is Hillcrest one of the most vibrant and historical neighborhoods in San Diego, but you can find many great places to eat. Bread & Cie makes their bread fresh every day in a huge hearth deck oven. Using natural starters, all natural ingredients and organic flour, the bread is absolutely delicious. And I'm not even much of a bread eater! They bake a wide variety of breads with rosemary, olives, peppers, walnuts, sourdough, onions, garlic, figs......They also have wonderful pastries, salads, sandwiches and more. The interior of the bakery is Old World brick style. You could sit indoors, but since this is San Diego, the weather is always nice enough to sit outside!

Chocolat Bistro
This is a funky little gem located in the heart of the Hillcrest neighborhood in San Diego. The cow skin covered seats, chandelier from the ceiling and warm ambiance creates an interesting but comfortable atmosphere. I really enjoyed the portobello & brie pannini. Their crepes are a decadent treat in the morning, and they serve breakfast all day.

Blue Water Seafood Market and Grill
Blue Water Grill has the best fish sandwiches I've had here in San Diego. They have fish plates, sandwiches, cocktails and chowders. Everything is fresh- they only serve what was caught that morning. They don't skimp on the fish in your sandwich, so it's well worth the money. I always get the wild trout sandwich grilled in lemon/garlic butter with avocado added. Maybe one day I'll get something different...but the trout is just so good! Tip: Even before this place was featured on the TV show- 'Diners, Drive in's and Dive's' it was very crowded at lunch time (11:30-2pm). If you want something here around that time, call in your order and then bypass the long line to pick your food up at the register.

The Deli Llama
Deli Lama is located in the eclectic neighborhood of Hillcrest in San Diego. I'm not really a sandwich person, but the 'Big Top' panini keeps me coming back! I would like to tell you about the other items on the menu- if I could just get past ordering this sliced Anjou pear, spinach, walnut, double cream brie and touch of honey panini every time I go in. Maybe this afternoon I will try something different... Tip: This deli is located in a historic building and they aren't compliant to offer restroom service to customers. It's a small space, so if you're eating lunch during rush hour, you may just want to pick up and head over to the nearby Balboa Park to eat. Otherwise, have a seat and enjoy looking at the interesting antique circus props.

Rd Alchemy Natural Products
This is my favorite shop in the San Diego community of Little Italy. Regina DiSilvestro is a chemist and herbalist and has created a line of skin and hair care products. Everything is made and packaged right there in the back of the shop. They also carry hand crafted jewelry and a selection of bulk herbs. There's a little sink so you can try out the various products. You can check out their class schedule before you get in town as she holds lotion making, lip balm making and herbal certification classes right there in the shop.

Park Boulevard Wine and Pizza
If you're looking for a chill place to enjoy a glass of wine and a gourmet pizza, the Park Blvd Wine & Pizza bar is the perfect stop! My husband and I enjoy coming here after a long hike. Pictured here is a glass of pinot with an organic apple, arugula, gorgonzola and pesto pizza. Delicious! They have an extensive list of gourmet pizza choices. Or, you can order salads, sides (such as baked honey brie) and sandwiches. You'll find this gem tucked away on Park Blvd just north of the University Heights sign. It can be really crowded in the evening and lunch hour, so the best time is between 1:30- 4pm where you can grab the best seating and eat in a chill atmosphere.

Micho'z Fresh Lebanese Grill
Michoz's is a small place found on University Ave in the Hillcrest neighborhood in San Diego. My husband and I love to support local owned businesses and Michoz's is near my office, so we come here sometimes for lunch or dinner. The food is fresh and fabulous. They obviously don't skimp on the quality of the ingredients- the olive oil tastes like it was pressed right there in the kitchen. I want to try more items from the menu, but the tilapia wrap is amazing. The baba ghanouj is the best I've had yet. My husband enjoys gourmet cooking at home and he's still trying to deconstruct the tangy battata harra (a potato side dish). During warm, sunny days there's a patio out front you can sit on and watch the people stroll past. Or, sit inside and check out the photos taken in Beruit in the 1930's that decorate the walls. Even though we don't come in very often, since we don't live in the area, we're greeted warmly and they always remember us.

Little Italy
Whenever I go to San Diego, I spend Saturday morning at the farmer's market in Little Italy, or as it's called The Little Italy Mercato. It's in the downtown area and a 10 minute walk from the Gaslamp Quarter. Vendors sell everything from seafood, crepes, and pizzas to organic fruits and vegetables, sauces, teas and coffees, and clothes and jewelry. The weather is always sunny and warm, there is always great live music playing, and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants near by to sit down and people watch.

Cafe Bassam
Cafe Bassam is an amazing place- it feels very magical, as though you've stepped into a place where time stops and the rest of the world has disappeared completely. Even though they opened their doors in 1991, they are the oldest coffee house in San Diego. This is such a chill place, in the photo is Bassam himself speaking with a friend. The cafe is larger than the image shows. The fellow in the lower right corner is Bassam, who was meeting with a friend when I snapped this photo. He's often seen hanging out here. They make hot sandwiches, have some pastries and sell varieties of coffee, tea, port, wine and beer. If you get a cup of tea, you are given a large cup of hot water and then you are sent over to the rows of glass tea canisters to choose what you would like. At Bassam's you don't pay until you are walking out the door which encourages patrons to sit and relax on one of the couches or talk with a friend without feeling rushed. The decor is really interesting, antique photos, jewelry, paintings, guns, clocks and other unique items are scattered about the cafe. It doesn't feel stuffy at all, instead, it feels like a place where creations come to be born, where the idea for a masterpiece novel is first considered or a profound philosophical idea takes root. Tip: They have free WiFi and, unlike most other cafes around San Diego, they are open late- Mon-Sat. they close at 1am and Sunday they close at 12am.

Tecolote Canyon Natural Park
Tecolote Canyon was once inhabited by the Kumeyaay peoples. This park has about 6 1/2 miles of hiking and bicycling trails. A great part of it runs along the Tecolote Canyon golf course. My husband and I love visiting nature centers to learn about the surrounding environs and the one here is one of my favorites. There's a display that groups together the tracks, scat and skulls of the various animals in the area. Very cool! They also have several snakes on display so you can see the difference between a gopher and a rattlesnake. Besides the rattle, they do look a little similar! Tip: San Diego has a unique climate, during our summers everything is dried out and golden brown. Our green seasons are the winter and spring when we have a little rain and everything is green and the flowers are blooming. This canyon hike isn't too interesting in the summer (our summer is late July-October), but during the the other months it is really pretty.

The Linkery
If you want to eat food that is grown in San Diego county, come eat at The Linkery. They make all their own sausage right there in the restaurant, so if you love meat- this is a place for you. Don't worry, there are menu options for those that don't eat meat as well. The restaurant has a hip neighborhood vibe and during the day you can sit by the large windows for people watching. If you come at night, I recommend you make a reservation as this place gets packed on weekend evenings. Lunch time is usually much calmer.

Vagabond Kitchen
This is a hidden gem, tucked away near some other shops on 30th St. in San Diego. I love the warm ambiance and the friendly service. The food is really good, I love the salmon with artichoke barigoule and the arugula salad. The chocolate bread pudding is really good to eat with a friend and a glass of port. The four corners of the world are represented in the menu, so be adventurous! Definitely make reservations, this is a small restaurant and it gets filled up quickly on the weekends.

Ocean Beach Park
After an amazing day of seeing beautiful vistas, wildlife, & surfers along the coastal area of San Diego (Pt. Loma, Sunset Cliffs), I grabbed a burger at Hodad's (http://www.hodadies.com) and enjoyed the view. What made it more remarkable was I am from Boston, it was the middle of our winter and I was in summer clothes with an amazing backdrop for outdoor dining.

A very cool Top Chef owned dining experience in San Diego's Gaslamp district. Whether you are stopping by for a drink and small bites or decide to try out the entrees, you will not be disappointed. The Mission
My husband and I enjoy good food, and The Mission for breakfast is a favorite. There are three locations and this one in the photo is on University Ave. We haven't been here for lunch yet. I've tried just about everything on the menu. There's plenty of choices for a vegetarian and they even serve up several dishes with chorizo made from soy. My favorite dish is the platos verde con huevos. They open at 7am on the weekends and if you aren't here by 7:40- you will probably have to wait for a table.
