World Renown Cinque Terre, Italy!
Our family toured the world for a year. Every time we said we were going to Italy people would tell us we had to go to Cinque Terre. Known as the five villages, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are each built along the cliffs of the Italian Riviera accessible only by train and linked by a hiking trail that runs along the Mediterranean.
It was early April...the perfect time of year. It was warm, but not hot as we strolled along the breathtaking vistas. As the day progressed so did the difficulty of the trail, winding up and down the cliffs.
We stopped for gelatos and espressos in every village as well as savoring the exquisite cuisine on a patio in Manarola before tackling the last, and most strenuous leg of the hike. Our 13 year old son Zion and 9 year old daughter Riel were amazing, scampering and clamouring with the best of them, engaging in animated conversations and laughter. As we headed into the last leg of the long hike, Riel past me as I filmed the trail, pumping her arm in a rallying gesture usually associated with team sports in overtime.
“I love you little dude,” I yelled after her, “you’re a rock star!” She flashed devil horns with both hands as she disappeared around the corner.
One of the most incredible hikes we did all year!
