The ex monastary of Santiago Apostol in Cuilapan, Oaxaca was a large Catholic monastery built by the Spanish to subdue the large population of indigenous Zapotecs and Mixtecs living in the region. The monastery contains an unexplained block that has a message carved in Mixtec and the date 1,555 written in an arabic script. There is no historic documentation about the meaning of the this block. The monastery is located near Oaxaca City along the highway leading to the town of Zaachila.
