Unlikely Art: Artisanal Brew

Headed to the Cook Islands, I was expecting to see mostly imported beers from other countries, like Heineken, Steinlager and so on. However, to my surprise and enjoyment, I discovered that Rarotonga had a microbrewery making a pair of craft beers on the island for the island's consumption. The Matutu Brewery is run by two native Cook Islanders, who learned the art of brewing while living in New Zealand and brought their craft back to share with the rest of Rarotonga. I was told that the beer was not distrubuted beyond the island and I found it readily available in every bar, restaurant and store on Rarotonga. I drank as many of these amazing beers as I could, because I knew that I would not have another chance once I traveled on to the nearby island of Aitutaki. Talking with locals about Matutu, I could hear a sense of pride in their voice when they spoke about the virtues of making quality craft brew right on the island.
