The Plaosan Complex, located near Jogyakarta in Central Java, is a pair of Buddhist temples and associated structures that were constructed in the middle of the ninth century AD - long before the arrival of Islam, which dominates the island today. The temples feature ornate stone accoutrements and relief panels that highlight the Buddha throughout his journey to enlightenment. Plaosan is easily included as part of a day trip from Jogyakarta that includes the more popular Prambanan temple. The history of Java is fascinating, because of the influx of religious influences to island over the centuries.
