Tonina
The ancient Maya city of Tonina has its ceremonial core built onto a hillside, creating the appearacnce of one massive pyramid. Tonina reached its zenith during the Classic Period (250-900 AD) and was an adversary of Palenque. The hillside temple complex is a joy to climb and explore. There are chambers, tunnels and stairs to discover; some with spectacular stucco relief panels still clinging to the cut stone walls. The top of the pyramid allows one to look out over the surrounding farmland and verdant highland forests.
