Tikal Awakens
Getting up in the pre-dawn is not usually on my agenda, but wanting to see the Gran Plaza in Tikal at sunrise was sufficient motivation. I expected at least a handful of others would be similarly motivated, but my expectation was fantastically wrong. Alone in the misty morning, the pyramids dissolving into the gray sky, while the oropendolas and scores of other birds pierced the thick air with their song, I felt almost as if I were a ghost, floating serenely through the royal complex. I didn’t get to see the sun rise as a ball of flame over the pyramids; instead, the city of Tikal emerged slowly out of the mist, as though materializing out of the past from a dream into reality. And I the lone witness.

A fantastic photo! If a picture could capture not just history but a spiritual essence this is it.
I've been to the ruins at Chichen Itza and Tulum but this shot really gets me excited about seeing Tikal.
Any travel advice?
Thanks, Thomas. I've been to Chichen Itza and Tulum as well, and though lovely, they can't prepare you for Tikal! :-) Yes please go see! My only real advice, I guess, would be to book accommodation in the park. This gives you pre-dawn access, which is when this particular photo was taken. I would not plan less than 2 full days if you're really interested in the ruins. The place is huge. I took a guided tour one afternoon, and explored independently the other day and a half. Hopefully you are still permitted to do the latter (I guess you should investigate). I could have used more time, to be honest. And as always, advise to travel in the off-season if possible.
Thanks for the update. Are there any problems at Tikal with robbings or pickpocketing? Is the site secure?
