The Month Less Traveled

Marooned thirty miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Nantucket is an island with many personalities. The month you decide to visit will greatly determine the character, mood and people you’ll encounter on island. The summer months are what most people are familiar with. July and August is wrought with seersucker-clad rich kids; fine dining extravagance at every turn; jumbo yachts littering the harbor; overpriced everything; and hob-knobbing philanthropists rubbing elbows at beachside fundraisers. This is NOT all Nantucket has to offer! There are 10 months of the year that often go ignored. In my humble (and biased) opinion, these are the times to really see Nantucket. The fall is by far my favorite time of year to explore the island. The days are cool and sunny; the ocean is warmer in September than in July; the beaches are empty; and the locals have a happy disposition – busy season is over so they can reclaim the island. Situated in the Gulf Stream, Nantucket is the ideal place to experience a true Indian summer. Almost fifty percent of the island is preserved, conservation land. There is no end to the trails and roads you can wander. The entire island is a Historic District which is why the houses all look the same and there are no off-island chain stores. So, whether you’re strolling the cobbled streets, or exploring the natural side of things, you will feel like you’re walking through time.

One small correction, the amount of land in preservation is closer to 50%, still impressive. September and October are my favorite months, the best to see what Nantucket is really all about.

Thanks Susan! I've made the adjustment. Are you on the Rock year-round?

Have been since'82. There's no place I'd rather live. Although... it is nice to visit the Caribbean during those long cold months....
